SIX

Back in his room, Jared deleted files, and encrypted others. He cleared his browsing history and website data, cleaned his computers in case the police wanted to search them. When he finished, he shut the computers down. Even he knew he couldn’t catch everything. He looked out the window and saw one of the cops from the surveillance van standing at the front door. Jared learned later from Jameson the officer asked to use the bathroom, so he could take a donut and coffee dump. So far, he was on schedule and on his game. He had no idea murder was so easy. He was disappointed it wasn’t more challenging. He would have to step it up to boost his fury, his psyche. Planning for number four, he decided to kill another woman. Lori only killed men. The look in his father’s eyes threatened, his mother’s eyes begged. Jared’s next female victim, he thought, should also be someone well known in Atlanta. He wanted to try using electricity, a jolt from a power grid, maybe suffocation. The large screen, plasma television behind him had an attractive news anchor who delivered the news. He watched her, saw her name on the bottom of the screen. He ordered the computers to reboot and to find out all they could about her. They found her home address.

When Jared?

“It must be tonight.”

Then, he would be closer to his goal of five victims. He would go for the gold in the Killing Olympics. He would force Jake to get Lori released from prison then slaughter Jake while his legendary Goddess of Death watched. He sat in his chair and closed his eyes to play out the scene in his mind. He had an incredible run so far, mom, dad, and the judge. He controlled the cops and press. He needed to be certain he still controlled Jared Hamilton. The next kill would be dramatic and frightening then it would be time for his Magnum Opus of Death. He opened his eyes and noticed blood splatters on his shirt he hadn’t seen before. He couldn’t believe he missed it. It was not the work of a genius. It startled him into a mad pacing as he tried to determine if he had missed anything else. He saw the DVD on his desk. He stripped off his shirt, pants, socks, and boxers. He decided to burn them in the fireplace, although it was summer and smoke from the chimney would bring a question from the cops. He would tell them he was burning some lab chemicals. He’d joke with them and say there was a new pope. The police loved asking questions.

The woman psychologist they sent lived for questions. She hung around the main house pretending she was there for him, but she made herself at home. She loved lounging in the living room between their talks and raiding the refrigerator with Jameson’s help. Jared wasn’t in the mood for questions. He’d never study for another Ph.D. He’d wither away working Wall Street.
